The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts presented a four-day engagement with Black Grace, an all-male dance ensemble from New Zealand. Known for fusing Pacific traditional cultures with contemporary dance, and for performing to music ranging from Samoan indigenous music to Bach and hip-hop, Black Grace continues to work under founder and director Neil Ieremia's choreographic vision, blending eclectic source material with highly physical vocabulary. The company's Kimmel Center program included the signature work Minoi, which showcases Samoan slap dancing and singing; Surface, which traces the masculine traditions of the Samoan culture; and a new work entitled Gathering Clouds.
