Opera Philadelphia presented the American premiere of Hans Werner Henze's Phaedra (2007), an opera hailed by the New York Times for its "consistent rhythmic vitality and [...] otherworldly beauty that is hard to resist." The production stared tenor William Burden as Hyppolyt, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford as Phaedra, counter-tenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as Artemis, soprano Elizabeth Reiter as Aphrodite, and bass-baritone Jeremy Milner as Minotauros. Phaedra was conducted by Opera Philadelphia Music Director Corrado Rovaris, directed by Artistic Director Robert Driver, and designed by Phillipe Amand (sets and lighting) and Richard St. Clair (costumes). Educational activities included pre-concert lectures, a "Taste of Opera" community lecture/recital, and an open rehearsal for Opera Philadelphia's "Sounds of Learning" program.
