We asked multimedia artist Mariam Ghani what artists need to consider in work that seeks to effect social change. “Very few artists are able to invest long-term in a particular social practice project,” Ghani said. “In order for there to be enough build up and enough follow up for actual change to happen, you need to have partnerships with people who are really working on the ground. The art is like the tip of the iceberg.”

Mariam Ghani is a multimedia artist, writer, and filmmaker, who has served as a Center panelist in Exhibitions & Public Interpretation (2017) and Performance (2016). Ghani’s work has been exhibited and screened at the Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, dOCUMENTA (13), Liverpool Biennial, and Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, among others. She is a visiting scholar at the Center for the Humanities at the Graduate Center, CUNY, and a fellow at the New York Public Library.
