Barren Sceptre Reconstruction

Dancefusion

Dancefusion reconstructed modern dance pioneer José Limón’s 1960 duet Barren Sceptre, originally created in collaboration with Pauline Koner and inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth. Former Limón company members Evelyn Shepard and Ann Vachon set the reconstruction, and Dancefusion company member Janet Pilla and Pennsylvania Ballet soloist Meredith Rainey performed the work as part of Dancefusion's 20th anniversary season at the Iron Gate Theater at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dancefusion is a modern dance repertory company based in Philadelphia. Founded by Gwendolyn Bye, the company presents reconstructions of historic American modern dance work and actively creates new works. Since its founding in 1987, Dancefusion has restaged works by historic dance figures including Mary Anthony, Pauline Koner, Anna Sokolow, and José Limón, and has commissioned new work by local choreographers such as Kun-Yang Lin, David Konyk, and Myra Bazell. In 2007, Dancefusion received Center support to reconstruct José Limón’s 1960 duet Barren Sceptre.
