Member-run artist collective Vox Populi will launch a curatorial fellowship program dedicated to performance art. Vox Populi will host five curatorial fellows in total over a period of two years; each will complete two months of research and then oversee two months of programming at AUX, Vox Populi's performance art space. Artist-members and staff will work closely with fellows to ensure that their programs are linked thematically to existing AUX programs, and to experiment with new approaches to audience participation. In working with these outside fellows, Vox will expand its national network, while educating its members and local audiences about experimental performance practices outside of the immediate artistic community. Fellows will be chosen initially through a nomination process and later, after the program gains traction, through an open call. [fn]Management grants, through the Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiative, were awarded from 2009 through 2013.[/fn]
Founded in 1988, Vox Populi is a member-run artist collective that presents exhibitions in its white box main gallery, performances in its black box AUX space, media programs in its curated video-lounge, and other programs such as gallery talks, performances, lectures, and related events. The gallery periodically invites curators from outside the Philadelphia region to curate thematic exhibitions. Guests curators have included Lia Gangiatano (Participant Inc., New York), Malik Gaines (LAX, Los Angeles), Ceci Moss (Hammer Museum, Los Angeles), and Astria Suparak (formerly of Miller Gallery, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh).
