The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage’s Pew Fellow Artist Residencies
Since 2011, The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has provided Pew Fellows with opportunities for residencies intended to push their artistic practice and broaden their horizons.
The Pew Fellows selected for these residencies find themselves in new surroundings—from the big sky country of Wyoming, to a 15th-century castle in the Umbrian countryside, to a remote island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland—thanks to a partnership between the Center and the Alliance of Artists Communities. An additional partnership with MacDowell in New Hampshire gives a Pew Fellow each year the opportunity to spend time at one of the oldest and most prestigious residency programs in the US.
These artist residencies are meant to extend the Center’s relationship with Pew Fellows beyond the given time period of their awards and contribute to a long term impact on their work. The invaluable time to work diligently in new spaces and to network with artists across disciplines and beyond their local communities has the potential to impact the trajectory of a Pew Fellow’s career, opening up possibilities for new creative discoveries, which these artists can then bring home to the Philadelphia region.
Since 2011, the Center’s residency partnerships have sent over 40 Fellows to residencies in Canada and the United States, adding Italy to the list of residencies in 2019. These include time spent at the Ucross Foundation, the Banff Centre, the 18th Street Arts Center, the Headlands Center for the Arts, the Civitella Ranieri Center, and Fogo Island Arts.
