Gregory Maqoma is a dancer and choreographer. He is the founder and creative director of Vuyani Dance Theatre in South Africa. His choreography has earned him numerous awards, including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres Award from the French government in 2017 and FNB Vita Choreographer of the Year in 1999, 2001, and 2002. He also received a Bessie Award for the original musical composition of Exit/Exist. Maqoma contributed the essay “Exit/Exist - Embodiment” to Center publication The Sentient Archive: Bodies Performance, and Memory, a collection of writings that illustrate how the body serves as a repository for knowledge.
