Barkley L. Hendricks (b. 1945 in Philadelphia) is a figurative painter and photographer best known for his life-sized portraits of people of color from the urban northeast. He received his BFA and MFA from Yale University, and his Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
From 2008-2010, Hendricks was the subject of a large-scale traveling exhibition, Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool, organized by the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University. With Center support, the exhibition was presented at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 2009/10. Hendricks' works are included in collections around the world, including The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; The Tate Modern, London, UK; Studio Museum, Harlem, NY; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC.
