Robert H. Browning, born in Singapore and educated in London, was the founding director of New York City’s World Music Institute (WMI), a position from which he retired in 2011. Since then, he has presented concerts independently and curates World Views, a series presented in partnership with Carnegie Hall. Browning came to New York in 1975 and co-founded the Alternative Center for International Arts (Alternative Museum), where he was director of music programs and special projects until 1985. Over the last four decades, he has produced more than 1,900 concerts of traditional and contemporary music from around the world. Browning has also exhibited as a painter and kinetic artist, and lectured at various art colleges from 1967–74. He and his wife Helene were subjects of the Center’s American Impresario project in 2012. Browning served as a Pew Fellowships panelist in 2010 and an LOI panelist in Performance in 2017.
