Joy Bivins is director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture—a division of the New York Public Library and the world’s premier repository for archival materials related to African, African diaspora, and African American life, history, and culture. Before joining the staff of the Schomburg Center in 2020 as associate director of Collections and Research Services, Bivins was chief curator of the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. From 2002 to 2018, she served as curator and director of curatorial affairs at the Chicago History Museum. Bivins holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Cornell University.
