John King is a composer, guitarist, and violist. He has been hosting and performing in a weekly online event, “Sonic Gatherings” with choreographer Brandon Collwes and a rotating cast of musicians and dancers, since April 1, 2020. King has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet, Ethel, Bang On A Can All-Stars, Mannheim Ballet, New York City Ballet Diamond Project, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC). His string quartets have also been performed by the Eclipse Quartet and the Mondriaan Quartet. He has written several operas, including ping, WHAT IS THE WORD, SapphOpera, herzstück/heartpiece, la belle captive, and Dice Thrown. King was a co-director of the music committee at MCDC from 2002 to 2011 and music curator at The Kitchen from 1999 to 2003. He received the 2014 Award for Sound/Music from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and the 2009 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts for Music. He was a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Fellow in March 2016 and in residence at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice, Italy, in 2019 and 2015. King served as a Center panelist for Pew Fellowships in 2020, 2019, and 2013.
