Gilbert Vicario is senior curator and division head for curatorial affairs at the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa. He organized Robyn O'Neil: The world has won. A final bow was taken.; and Single-channel 1: Elements of Displacement, a year-long video series featuring the work of Johanna Billing, Patty Chang, Ragnar Kjartansson, Jason Lazarus, Emily Jacir, Miguel Angel Rios, and Artur Zmijewski. Other exhibitions include Dario Robleto: Survival Does Not Lie in the Heavens (2011); Miguel Angel Rios: Walkabout (2012), in collaboration with the Carrillo Gil Museum in Mexico City; and Leslie Hewitt: Untitled (Structures) in collaboration with the Menil Collection and LACMA (2012).
Prior to coming to the Des Moines Art Center, Vicario worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Recent publications include Gabriel de la Mora: Drive and Method, published by Turner Publications (2011); Cosmopolitan Routes: Houston Collects Latin American Art, published by the Museum of Fine Art, Houston and Yale University Press (2011); and Daniel Joseph Martinez: A Life of Disobedience, published by Hatje Cantz (2009) with Hakim Bey, David Levi-Strauss, and Arthur C. Danto. Vicario is a contributor to Pigeons on the Grass, Alas: Contemporary Curators Talk About the Field, published by The Pew Center in 2013. He served as a Center exhibitions panelist in 2011 and a Pew Fellowships evaluator in 2011.
