Elisabeth Sussman is curator and Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Most recently, she co-curated the 2012 Whitney Biennial with independent curator Jay Sanders. Sussman's Gordon Matta-Clark: "You Are the Measure" was awarded the AICA award for best monographic show in New York (2007–08). She has organized many other Whitney exhibitions including William Eggleston: Democratic Camera, Photographs and Video, 1961–2008 (with Thomas Weski); Remote Viewing: Invented Worlds in Recent Painting and Drawing; Mike Kelley: Catholic Tastes; Nan Goldin: I'll Be Your Mirror (with David Armstrong); Keith Haring; and the museum's 1993 Biennial Exhibition. Her exhibitions have received critical acclaim including an International Art Critics Association First Prize for the full retrospective of Eva Hesse she co-organized with Renate Petzinger in 2001. She has been awarded fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation at the Rockefeller Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy in 1999, and at the Getty Research Institute in 2003. She sat on the Center's Pew Fellowships panel in 2010. Most recently, she served as a 2014 panelist and LOI panelist in Exhibitions & Public Interpretation, as well a 2014 Pew Fellowships evaluator.
