Known for innovation, creativity, and preservation of African-American traditions in dance, Philadanco has been dancing in the Philadelphia community since 1970. Initially founded in response to the lack of opportunity in professional companies for African-American dancers, the company performs for, and is comprised of, a diverse representation of ethnicities and communities. Founder and Artistic Director Joan Myers Brown was recently awarded a 2012 National Medal of Arts by President Obama for her work as a dancer, choreographer, and artistic director.
