Multimedia artist and Pew Fellow Tobin Rothlein created Civilian/Warrior, an interdisciplinary work combining dance, documentary film, and multi-screen video projections to create a hybrid between theatrical work and gallery installation. Inspired by Georg Büchner’s classic play Woyzeck and myths of the Hindu demon Kali, Civilian/Warrior used interviews and imagery sourced from recent war veterans to address the role of soldiers and citizens in modern day war culture. Rothlein collaborated with hip-hop choreographer and Pew Fellow Rennie Harris, Seattle-based choreographer Maureen Whiting, former Army Sergeant John McCary, classical Indian dancer Viji Rao, and choreographer Amanda Miller.
