Jonathan Lyndon Chase is a visual artist whose vivid, gestural portraits employ painting, collage, and drawing to reflect the complexities of black and queer identity. He describes the subjects of his portraits as “friends and family or my own reflection,” and he creates works that consider both the private and public nature of the body, often conveying intimate domestic scenes or rendering life-size figures in large-scale canvases. Some paintings are further textured with sculptural elements—a heap of dinner plates or a row of shoes—that sweep the environment of the canvas into the viewer’s space. Chase’s work has recently been shown in solo exhibitions at Company Gallery in New York City and Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, and he was named a “young artist to watch” by Artnet News. Chase holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
