Literature
Afaa Michael Weaver is a poet, short fiction writer, and editor. He has published many books of poetry, including The Government of Nature, Water Song, and The Ten Lights of God. His short stories have been anthologized in seveal books, including Children of the Night: The Best Short Stories by Black Writers, 1967 to the Present. Weaver has taught at Essex County College, Seton Hall Law School, CUNY, NYU, Drew University, Rutgers University, National Taiwan University, Taipei National University of the Arts, and Simmons College, where he was Alumnae Endowed Chair for twenty years. He also served as a faculty member at the Cave Canem Foundation annual retreat and was the first to be named an elder of the foundation. His awards and recognition include a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship, a Fulbright Scholarship, a Pennsylvania State Arts Council Fellowship, and a Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. He earned an MA in theater and playwriting from Brown University and a BA in literature from Excelsior College.
