Peter Saul (b. 1934 in San Francisco) is a painter best known for his lush, satirical, Pop-Surrealist cartoon style, described by The New York Times as "an artist's artist." Saul attended the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, and Washington University School of Fine Arts, Saint Louis. In 2008, Saul was the subject of a traveling retrospective organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, which was on view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and supported by the Center.
His work is part of many museum collections around the world, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Carnegie Museum of Art. Saul received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (1979 and 1985), and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1993. In 2010, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
