Kate Fowle

Kate Fowle is the chief curator for the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow, founded in 2008 as "an independent platform for new thinking" about contemporary art in Russia—primarily through experimental exhibitions, events, screenings and other educational projects for artists and the public. She is also director-at-large at Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York, where she served as executive director from 2009 to 2013. Before joining ICI, Fowle was the inaugural international curator at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. Fowle also co-founded the master's program in curatorial practice at California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2001 and was chairperson from 2002 to 2007. Before moving to the United States in 2001, she was co-director of Smith + Fowle in London (1996–2001) and curator at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne (1993–96).

From 2010–11, Fowle conducted the "Philadelphia Curatorial Intensive" at the Center, working with eight local curators on ways to rethink their programming assumptions. During the intensive, the curators looked at a variety of research methodologies, examined issues of context, and considered various forms of audience engagement.
