David Gutkin is a PhD student in historical musicology at Columbia University. He has written on philosophy of graphic notation in the mid-20th century, music and politics, and ludic theory. His dissertation is a study of American experimental operas from the 1970s to the 1990s. He has published in The Opera Quarterly, Perspectives of New Music, If A Then B: Notes on Translation, and Current Musicology. In early 2013, he participated with trombonist and 2012 Pew Fellow Dan Blacksberg in the Center's White Box Residencies project, originally conceived by Center Visiting Artist Ain Gordon. Gutkin served as a 2014 Center LOI panelist in Exhibitions & Public Interpretation.
